Insight into urinary tract infection (UTI)
Urinary tract infection (UTI) occurs when bacteria or other infectious organisms invade part of the urinary tract. Lower-channel infections are from the urethra (urethritis) or bladder (cystitis). Upper channel infections are from the kidney (pyelonephritis) or ureters (ureteritis).
Although UTIs occur in both men and women, women tend to be more bothered by it due to the anatomical difference.
The urethra of women is shorter than that of men, and the opening is only a short distance from the vaginal canal and the rectal openings. This increases the risk of bacteria from these adjacent areas throwing the tube into the bladder.
UTI is more common among boys in infants, but girls are more sensitive in toddlers. Uncut baby boys tend to accumulate bacteria under the foreskin. Young children with severe constipation problems are also more sensitive to UTI's.
Symptoms of urinary tract infection (UTI)
People suffering from UTI often have an urgent need to urinate and experience a painful burning sensation while urinating. The urgent need to urinate can cause uncontrollable urine loss (incontinence), especially in older people. The urinary frequency (in small amounts) also increases & night.
Fever is absent during UTI, but some may feel pain in the lower abdomen (above the pubic bone) and often also in the lower back. The urine is often cloudy, has a strong odor and may contain visible blood in some.
Causes of urinary tract infection (UTI)
A healthy person with a good immune system is able to ward off bladder and kidney infections. However, if there are stress, illness, physical injury or nutritional deficiencies, frequent use of antibiotics weakens the immune system, causing the bacteria to take over. Pregnancy, menopause and sexual intercourse also increase the risk of UTI.
Urinary tract infections are almost always caused by the Escherichia coli (E.coli) bacterium, although some viruses, fungi and parasites can also infect the urinary tract. Most infections are caused by bacteria that enter the gut or vagina. Bacteria that enter through the urinary tract are often washed away when the bladder is emptied.
viruses: The herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) can infect the urethra, which makes urination painful and makes emptying the bladder difficult.
fungus: A common type of fungus that causes UTI is Candida (causes candidiasis). This usually happens with people whose immune system is affected.
parasites: trichomoniasis, caused by a kind of microscopic parasite, is a sexually transmitted disease that produces greenish-yellow and foamy discharge from the vagina in women. There are usually no symptoms in men, although it can cause inflammation of the prostate gland.
Malaria is a disease caused by another type of microscopic parasite that is carried by mosquitoes. It destroys the small blood vessels of the kidney and can quickly damage red blood cells, causing acute renal failure.
Worm: schistosomiasis is another type of worm that can affect the kidneys, ureters, and bladder. Such a persistent infection can ultimately lead to bladder cancer.
Diet / lifestyle suggestions
The most important nutritional recommendation that I can offer to anyone suffering from UTI is to increase the consumption of fluids. Drink lots of liquids in the form of pure water, herbal teas, fresh fruit and vegetable juices diluted with water. These liquids help flush out of the bladder frequently.
Here are some simple steps you can take to shorten UTI:
- Avoid foods and drinks that are rich in sugar. Reduce your intake of table sugar, soft drinks, concentrated sweet fruit drinks, coffee and alcoholic drinks. Bacteria thrive in a sugary environment because it affects the ability of white blood cells to destroy bacteria.
- Other foods to avoid are processed foods, seasoned foods, fats, dairy products, red meat, and shellfish. These foods are acid-forming (not to be confused with acid-tasting foods such as citrus fruits). The acidity formed from these foods increases the bacterial infection.
- Take high-quality probiotics that can fight the infection more effectively. Or eat fermented food that contains active lactobacillus acidophilus (probiotics) and all useful bacteria that help fight harmful microbes. Some suggestions of fermented food are: kombucha, yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, sourdough bread, soya bean, tempeh and apple cider vinegar.
- Drink juices with a lot of vitamin C (citrus, especially grapefruit), because they help to create an environment in your urine that is hostile to most bacteria.
- Eat foods with a lot of vitamin A to rebuild your immune system.
- Foods with a high zinc content can also help by producing white blood cells and eliminating bacteria. Some of the best sources of zinc are oysters, brewer's yeast, ginger, beef liver, linseed, sunflower seeds, Brazil nuts, egg yolks, peanuts, oats, almonds and tofu.
- Drink cranberry juice. It contains a simple sugar that occurs naturally, called D-mannose. D-mannose can adhere to unwanted foreign substances in the bladder, so that these do not stick to the lining of the bladder. Because non-substantial amounts of D-mannose are used by the body, it does not interfere with blood sugar levels.
Recommended medicinal food to remedy urinary tract infection
If you are susceptible to UTI, drinking these juices regularly will help to reduce recurrence. It is most effective when the problem is not yet too serious / serious. For health problems, always squeeze the button.
Drink a glass of fresh cranberry or blueberry juice first and wait at least half an hour before you have anything to eat. This drink is useful for preventing UTI. In addition to all the healthy properties of these juices, they can also help limit the E. coli that cause UTI by removing the bacteria from the bladder walls.
Most of the healing foods listed below are diuretic. Juice any combination and keep drinking. They are useful for flushing out the toxins and bacteria from the bladder and clearing the infection.
Watermelon and watermelon juice are an excellent inclusion in your routine if you often get a UTI.

The nutrients rich in nutrients above are excellent for UTI patients. Juice any combination of these vegetables and / or fruit and just keep drinking. The sour taste (alkaline forming) of the citrus fruits helps to inhibit the growth of bacteria.
Some suggested combos (measurement for one portion):
- 6 ribs of celery + 1 cucumber + 1 fennel + ¼ lemon
- 1 cucumber + ½ celeriac + 1 jicama + 3-4 radishes (sharp) + a thumb-sized ginger root
- 1 grapefruit + 2 cups of cranberries + 2 cups of blueberries
- Large glass of watermelon juice + a dash of lemon juice
- Drink fresh coconut water (not packaged / bottled)
- Lemongrass ginger tea
