There are almost 70,000 messages left on Instagram, with people claiming it helps with everything from eczema to infertility. Is the increase in searches meaningful? We found out

It is hardly the most exciting vegetable, but most of the things that are good for us are usually not. In the form of a stick, it is a healthy source of fiber, vitamins C and K, and potassium. However, if you make the juice, it is worthy of the status of Instagram superstar. A search on #celeryjuice yields no fewer than 68,000 messages, with its bright green color making it perfect food for people's feeds.

But apart from that, it is the list of alleged health benefits that are largely responsible for the cult that follows. It becomes a & # 39; miracle juice & # 39; because of what they call the & # 39; cluster salt content & # 39; salts that are said to support the detoxification process of the liver and reduce bloating. Some social media and website users have said that they drink a glass of pure things on an empty stomach every morning with curing psychological problems, eczema, chronic diseases and infertility and even delaying cancer. Hmmm … the "C" word automatically calls alarm bells.

It is & # 39; pseudoscience & # 39 ;, says leading nutritionist Harley Street and author of Re-Nourish, Rhiannon Lambert, who raised the claims in an Instagram post as part of her # MythbustingwithRhi series. Despite what your feed tells you, there is in fact very little solid evidence to substantiate one of these claims.

From a nutritional point of view, juice offers a way to consume much more celery (and therefore the vitamins) than you would by eating it. However, keep in mind that you will lose the valuable fiber content. "Celery juice (and other vegetables) removes the useful fibers that help you feel full, improves gut health and nourishes healthy bacteria in your gut," she says. This is especially relevant in the light of new findings from the World Health Organization, which show that eating fiber-rich foods can reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and colorectal cancer by a significant 16 to 24 percent . The assessment showed that we should eat at least 25 to 29 grams of fiber per day, with indications that more than 30 grams is even better. However, most people in the world manage less than 20 grams, which means that more of us could probably benefit from increasing our intake instead of reducing it.

Regarding the detoxifying benefits of celery, it is just as questionable. “The good news is that you already have a detox system. It is called the liver and no tea, juice or diet will do its job even better! "If you really like bitter stalks that are juicing, go ahead and drink it, but if unnecessary suffering is not your thing, just drink plenty of water." Given the fact that celery consists of 95 percent water, that makes much sense.

So is celery juice the panacea that you would believe in certain corners of the internet? Although there are vitamins and minerals that need to be collected, the answer is unfortunately not until there is further evidence to support the claims.
